Top 5 Places to Take Special Occasion Photos in WNY

Summer is almost here! Which not only means warmer weather is on the horizon (if you’re reading this and you’re from Buffalo- you know this is cause for celebration), it means there are a ton of special occasions coming up. Two of these occasions are proms and weddings. Summer is prime wedding season here in Western New York, and the month of June is unofficially known as the kickoff. Obviously the month of June will see proms from Niagara Falls to Hamburg and everywhere in between.

It can be tough to choose the right location to take photos on these special days. While taking them in your own backyard has a nice hometown feel- often you want to take it to the next level. So with some personal experience of my own along with popular opinion- I present to you the top five places to take special occasion photos in WNY.

5.  Albright Knox Art Gallery

Also a popular engagement photo location, the gallery boasts some of the most stunning architecture in Western New York. Located in Delaware Park in Buffalo, the iconic staircase makes the perfect spot for wedding photos. Some helpful tips- the gallery permits photos only on the Delaware Park side of the building on a first come, first served basis. They do not take reservations for photos outside of the museum.

4. Delaware Park

Although the aforementioned Albright Knox Art Gallery occupies the western edge of the park, it deserves its own place on the list. Known as Buffalo’s “Central Park,”  there are countless things to do and see here. Some of the most beautiful places to take pictures include Hoyt Lake, the Rose Garden and the Ivy Bridge. But truly, you really can’t go wrong in the gorgeous Delaware Park.

3. Buffalo Waterfront

With an array of brightly colored Adirondack chairs, the First Niagara Center in the background and Lake Erie spread out in front of you, The Buffalo Waterfront is one of the most quintessentially “Buffalo” places to take photos on your big day. Part industrial and part quite charming, you are able to take a variety of pictures in a setting with a relaxed vibe. You can sprawl out on the chairs or pose prettily in front of a naval ship. The options are endless here!

2. Niagara Wine Trail

With over 20 member wineries- it is hard to pick just one to stop and take photos at. Located just minutes away from Buffalo/Niagara Falls, the Niagara Wine Trail showcases some of the most breathtaking landscapes in this region. While many wineries now actually hold weddings on their grounds- most are open to wedding parties dropping in on their way to the reception to take some pictures. Sidenote- if you haven’t been on a wine tour yet- you’re missing out!

1. Niagara Falls

I’m sure this will garner a collective “duh,”  but seriously- people come from all over the world to see this natural wonder! That’s kind of a big deal. Not to mention it used to be the Honeymoon Capital of the World! Other than just that huge waterfall, there are many beautiful areas in Niagara Falls State Park that make for the perfect special occasion photos. This includes Goat Island, Prospect Point and Three Sisters Island. Maybe I’m a bit bias since I was born and raised in Niagara Falls- but this would be my pick.

It was hard narrowing this list down to just five- others that didn’t make the list include Beaver Island, the Lafayette Hotel, City Hall, Artpark and the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. But that just goes to show you there is no shortage of awesome places to take special occasion photos in WNY- or even just to visit. It’s nice to know we have so much beauty all around us. Happy snapping!
